Finasteride
vs. dutasteride
for hair loss.
Two well-studied daily medications that protect your hair and help rebuild density. Here’s how they compare, in plain English.

Two great options.
Which fits you?
If thinning hair runs in your family, there’s a good chance a hormone called DHT is behind it. DHT gradually shrinks sensitive hair follicles, so each new hair grows in finer and shorter. Finasteride and dutasteride both work by lowering DHT — which is why they can slow thinning and, for many people, bring density back.
Finasteride is the long-established choice, with the deepest track record. Dutasteride does the same job a little more completely, and in head-to-head studies it came out ahead. Both are taken as a small daily dose and have been studied in thousands of men.
How they
protect your hair.
Your body makes DHT from testosterone using an enzyme that comes in two types. Finasteride blocks one of them (type II). Dutasteride blocks both (type I and II) — so it lowers DHT more completely.
Less DHT means follicles aren’t pushed to shrink, which is why early treatment works best: follicles that are thinning but still present can often be supported.

Why dutasteride
blocks more.
In a trial in men with an enlarged prostate, dutasteride 0.5 mg lowered blood DHT by about 95%, compared with about 71% for finasteride at 5 mg. That bigger drop is the reason dutasteride has been studied as the stronger option for hair loss.

Low doses,
well tolerated.
Both medications have been studied in thousands of people at the low doses used for hair loss, and most people take them without trouble.
Your questions,
answered.
Both work. In head-to-head studies, dutasteride 0.5 mg gave a bigger improvement than finasteride 1 mg over 24 weeks. Finasteride has the longest track record. Which suits you depends on your pattern, history and goals.
In Canada and the US it’s approved for prostate enlargement and is prescribed for hair loss “off-label” — a common, legal practice when a doctor judges the evidence supports it. It’s approved for hair loss in South Korea, where much of the long-term experience comes from.
Hair grows in cycles, so changes build gradually. Many people begin to see improvement over several months, with the clearest picture around the one-year mark.
At the low doses studied for hair loss, they’re generally well tolerated, and the pooled research shows similar tolerability between the two. We review your health history first, and they aren’t for anyone who is pregnant or planning to be.
Most of the strong research is in men. Evidence in women is more limited, so treatment for women is individualized — a good reason to start with an assessment.
Yes — that’s very common. Minoxidil, PRP and microneedling work differently, so they often complement a DHT blocker in one coordinated plan.
