How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do You Actually Need?
"How many sessions?" is the question every laser hair removal ad avoids, because the honest answer is "more than one" — and understanding why makes the whole process make more sense.
Why one session was never going to be enough
Hair grows in cycles, and laser only damages a follicle effectively when the hair is in its active growth phase. At any given time, only a portion of the hair in a treatment area is in that phase — the rest are dormant or shedding, invisible to the laser. That's the entire reason multiple sessions are necessary: each session catches a different batch of follicles as they cycle into their active phase.
The typical course
Most people need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results — though the exact number depends on the treatment area, hair type, and skin tone. Coarser, darker hair generally responds faster than fine or light hair, and larger areas can take longer to fully clear than smaller ones.
With a well-run course, most patients achieve 80–95% permanent reduction. That's not the same as "you'll never see a hair again" — occasional maintenance sessions are sometimes recommended to manage the last stray follicles over time, particularly in areas influenced by hormones.
What actually changes the timeline
- Hair color and thickness. The laser targets melanin in the hair shaft, so darker, coarser hair generally responds in fewer sessions than fine or light hair.
- Skin tone and laser technology. Older laser systems struggle to safely treat darker skin tones. A Nd:YAG platform is specifically built to safely and effectively treat a wider range of skin tones, including darker complexions that aren't good candidates for many other systems.
- Treatment area. Small areas (like the upper lip) often clear faster than large areas (like full legs or back), simply due to hair density and growth-cycle variation across a bigger surface.
- Hormonal factors. Areas affected by hormonal changes may need more sessions, or occasional touch-ups after the initial course, than areas that aren't.

What to do between sessions
Shaving between sessions is fine and recommended — it doesn't disturb the follicle. Waxing and plucking, however, remove the follicle itself, which is exactly what the laser needs to target, so both interfere with your results and should be avoided for the whole course. Sun exposure should also be minimized in the two weeks before each session.
Many patients notice some hair reduction after the very first session, but the full, optimal result only shows up after completing the recommended course — which is exactly why a realistic session count matters more than a single low introductory price.
Monarch MD uses a Fotona Nd:YAG laser system with FRAC3® technology, supervised by Dr. Akbari, which is built to target hair follicles at depth while safely accommodating a wider range of skin tones than many older laser platforms. You can learn more on our laser hair removal page.
